Insert to manage landscape
Between 2007 and 2023, pTo intervene in the protection of small built heritage, the Grand Site de France Solutré Pouilly Vergisson created and mobilized a team of eight people in professional integration: the Landscape Management Brigade.
By combining heritage and a return to employment, the Grand Site forges a close link between ancestral know-how and society. In a virtuous movement, the Men of yesterday support and accompany the Men of today.

This program insertion Professional was part of the “Integration Workshop” system, approval of which is issued by the State. It enabled people far from employment to integrate a dynamic course by acquiring knowledge and skills on work sites. These projects offered participants the opportunity to develop all areas promoting their socio-professional integration: skills, work on oneself, teamwork, presentation, hygiene, health, relationships, construction of a social integration project and/or professional, respect for hierarchy. At the service of the beneficiaries, the conduct of such an approach responded to integration objectives, in terms of returning to employment or starting training, which are sometimes difficult to achieve due to varied situations and backgrounds.
The Grand Site brigade
The device made it possible to carry out numerous restoration projects that traditional masonry companies could not carry out due to a particular technique and high costs. The Grand Site Brigade only intervened in public domain and was esupervised by a site manager. The latter, in a process of professionalization, obtained level II of the Professional qualification certificate « Dry stone builder », devoting know-how that has almost disappeared in the region.
The reintegration of the masonry in dry stone, through the Brigade, very quickly aroused the interest of the municipalities that own built heritage in the process of deterioration, and local wine growers, concerned about the image associated with their wines renowned: Saint Véran and Pouilly-Fuissé in particular. If the Roche de Solutré is the main emblem, the dry stone building is part of the genetics of these wines. It represents the history of the generations who cultivate it today, that of their ancestors who structured the landscape with the strength of their arms.
From 2011, the Grand Site relied on the skills of its Brigade to carry out actions of awareness and training of the general public. From now on, each year, two sessions of stages introduction to dry stone construction are open to everyone, in particular to wine growers. These courses have been supplemented, since 2020, by two advanced training sessions so that private actors acquire sufficient technical skills to contribute to the safeguarding of this identity heritage. The brigade team leader trains the municipal employees of the communes of the Grand Site and the students from the Davayé wine high school. It provides services of expertise and advice to private owners who request it.
In addition, La majority of dry stone walls located on private plots, belonging in particular to wine growers, des local associations are mobilized for the preservation and restoration of cadoles and small dry stone structures. They thus enable the preservation of a large number of these shelters left abandoned and in danger. The inventory made it possible to identify 90 linear kilometers of walls and to count 80 cadoles.
Heritage restoration…but not only that!
The Brigade was mobilized for all the tasks of daily management of the Grand Site: maintenance and cleaning of trails, reception facilities, maintenance of pastures, minor works.
This integration system, as it was implemented between 2007 and 2023, fully corresponds to the values of the sustainable development, promoted by the Grands Sites de France, based on economic and social development, environmental protection and conservation of natural resources. In 2016, he was awarded the “ ESF Initiative Trophies ”, in the “sustainable development” category.
