Pilot projects

Since the CAUE study was presented in June 2021, the Grand Site has entered a pre-operational phase. A roadmap, established primarily to work on the development of the "Stone Path," outlines the procedure to be followed by an individual or a public project leader wishing to restore dry stone walls.

The Grand Site aims to expand its intervention to include the restoration of private walls across the territory. This could involve financial support for project leaders, subject to compliance with certain implementation rules. However, uncertainty remains regarding the capacity of the dry stone walling sector to meet the high demand for wall restoration: are there enough professionals? Where can the necessary materials be sourced?

Before embarking on this operation, a testing phase is currently underway in the 10 municipalities of the Grand Site through pilot projects . Each project, focusing on a specific municipality, theme, and theme, allows for an assessment of the region's capacity to respond to all situations and projects. Since 2022, the Grand Site, in partnership with the municipalities, has regularly organized dry stone walling workshops to foster projects for the restoration, creation, or enhancement of this heritage. Delegations appointed by the municipalities participate in these workshops, which are led by heritage architect Bettina Blasquez. The aim is to establish benchmark projects within the region and set an example to follow. The Grand Site plays a supporting role in pooling resources and assists the municipalities to ensure the successful completion of these projects.
