Spirit of the place are you there?
« The notion of spirit of place is used to designate the particular personality of each Grand Site. This specific personality is based on tangible and intangible characteristics, which are part of an objective and partly sensitive appreciation of the place, on the part of the person who experiences it. »
Extract from the document “Common values of the Grand Sites de France”It is indeed a unique spirit that we are talking about here. The one we live, the one we feel, the one we remember.
Iconic landscape
The diversity of features within the " grand landscape " is a defining characteristic of the Solutré Pouilly Vergisson Grand Site de France. In this unique panorama , cliffs , plateaus with their limestone grasslands , the regular patterns of vineyards on the slopes, woodlands crowning the summits of certain mountains and hillsides, and meadows in the valley bottoms all harmonize and contrast. Nestled amidst the vineyards, villages and hamlets punctuate this landscape and contribute to its identity through the ubiquitous use of limestone.

The natural heritage is exceptional. With emblematic elements such as the spectacular cuesta reliefs , rocky spurs born from rare geological phenomena, and the calcareous grasslands , well represented on the hillsides and plateaus of the rocks, characterized by specific flora and fauna , the landscape here is the setting for environments of great ecological interest.
single story
The continuous presence of humankind for 55,000 years has left its mark on an exceptional landscape , which humans have skillfully exploited and shaped to establish themselves. This remarkable historical heritage is rich in a Middle to Upper Paleolithic site at the foot of the Roche de Solutré, Gallo-Roman remains , historical monuments, and examples of small-scale dry-stone construction reflecting local expertise.
Three great men gave this exceptional site its nobility:
- Adrien Arcelin, geologist and prehistoric archaeologist from Fuissé, discoverer of the prehistoric site,
- Alphonse de Lamartine, romantic poet and politician from Mâcon,
- François Mitterrand, fourth President of the Fifth French Republic.
Viticulture
Man has created with his own hands, on these exceptional terroirs, the gold of the earth . The cultivation of the vine in this remarkable environment has given birth to several recognized Appellations d'Origine Contrôlée, including Pouilly-Fuissé and Saint-Véran.
Identity
The attachment of the inhabitants to their place of residence, the pride of the farmers in showcasing this jewel and extracting the best from land cultivated by their ancestors, the desire of socio-economic actors to develop an even more attractive, vibrant and lively territory , are all intangible values that also characterize the Grand Site.
