The Museum of Prehistory recounts the collections and the history of the archaeological site of Solutré in its permanent itinerary. It surprises with new temporary exhibitions for all audiences, hosted or created internally each year.

UNDERSTANDING PREHISTORY AT THE MUSEUM

Between education and fun activities, the permanent route presents remarkable objects resulting from archaeological research in Solutré and in the Mâconnais. Nearly 600 original prehistoric objects are on display for the curious. Admire fossils, hunted animals, tools, human remains and works of art. Learn through educational videos, touch quizzes and 3D models. Explore the life, environment and art of prehistoric communities.

TEMPORARY EXHIBITION

The spear-thrower, from reindeer hunters to kangaroo hunters

From February 7, 2026 to January 3, 2027

What is a spear-thrower? It's the weapon used by nomadic peoples of glacial Europe to hunt large mammals for at least 20,000 years! The exhibition presents the uses of this iconic weapon on five continents, from prehistory to the present day.

Independent explorations to enjoy as a family

The Museum of Prehistory offers you two Experiences to enjoy as a family, at your own pace and in complete independence. Thanks to the trunk and satchel, veritable adventure kits, immerse yourself in the heart of prehistory at the museum and archaeological park!

For the little ones, the Trunk of small prehistoric objects transforms the museum into a real playground, to discover the life of our ancestors. The older ones will be able to go to adventure with their bag, in the footsteps of Tarandro, a young boy from prehistory!
