A unique landscape composition

Sa landscape composition singular is made up, at its heart, of incredible rocks with harmoniously cut silhouettes, those of Solutré and Vergisson. The aptly named “Mont” of Pouilly offers a rounder and softer relief to the eye. These superb spurs dominate the renowned vines of the grands crus of Pouilly-Fuisse and Saint-Véran, the villages typical wineries of the Mâconnais, the bocage and in the forest. This prestigious heritage ensemble makes up a spectacular and unusual site, a high place occupied by humans for at least 55 years, the emblem of an entire region.

It is first of all the mineral elements that catch the eye. These two rocks, majestic promontories resulting from the uplift of the tectonic plates, are the identifiable landmarks of this great landscape, belvederes which invite contemplation.

Man is omnipresent, inseparable from the history of this landscape that he has shaped, a moving landscape on the scale of time, extremely alive in the present moment. Looking closely, everything gives the feeling of a very maintained, very gardened, very worked space.

Here, the meadows of bocage with square and rectangular shapes whose edges are marked by lines of ditches, hedges of trees and shrubs.

There, the small vineyard plots with varied geometric shapes fit into each other like a pentomino puzzle game. The numerous paths, or chaintres, which border these plots, the low walls dry stone which surround them to form enclosures, or mark the lines and reliefs a little more, reinforce this landscape puzzle.

A living landscape

straight segments of the vine fill in the shapes of this puzzle. The ranks, in the direction of greatest comb, are punctuated arithmetically by the stakes. The galvanized trellis wires reflecting the sun's rays reinforce this structure, make it shine.

From time to time, at the heart of geometry and purity lines, an isolated tree, a fruit tree, an almond tree, a cherry tree of Saint Lucia, or a cadole, come punctuate an angle or intersection. Increasingly rare, these elements of local heritage are threatened with extinction.

limestone lawns occupy the steep slopes of hillsides, in their almost part summit. This environment is rich and precious, recognizedEuropean interest by its ranking Natura 2000. But its natural evolution, described as climax, is the return to shrub and then tree afforestation. Man manages to keep the environment open to preserve a biotope unique and precious.

There are so many diversity made up of people from different backgrounds in this small territory. Combining the mineral au vegetal, everything here is contrasts et paradoxes : the weather and the seasons, the views and perspectives. This site is never the same, from one hour to the next, from one day to the next, from one season to the next. There brightness day, dawn, dusk or night, cloud cover, leaf colors, snow, frost, shadows... are all parameters which modify the reading and the perception. They give it back every day unique, magical, the personify sometimes to see him sometimes angry, sometimes smiling, sometimes asleep.

emotion that this landscape arouses in each of us is at the same time Universal, intrinsic, but also intimately linked to our personal feelings, to our own identity, to our history and to our remembrances. A sound, a smell, a touch then awakens feelings conscious and unconscious.

For all these reasons, this site and its landscape characteristics have been the subject, since the beginning of the 20thrd century, of protective measures and preservation successive.
